Does starting your own Youtube channel make chills run down your spine? Have no fear, this session covers the basics for how to start a channel, upload a video, and share it with a wider audience. If children can make millions of dollars on this social media platform, you can use it to your benefit in education. Whether you want a place to store all of the videos you have created, or want to share student work with a wider audience, this session is geared towards helping educators start using the platform.

Do words like Yeet and Cosplay sound confusing? Should you be concerned when you overhear students use acronyms like FPS or EDM? Isn’t fluff just what it is in your pillow, not a genre of writing? The Internet has completely changed the landscape of language used by people of all ages. In this session, you will gain an understanding of terms that are used by individuals ranging in age from 6 to 60. Pop culture changes rapidly, but by understanding the terms presented in this session, educators can gain a greater understanding of what their students are actually talking about, and form greater connections with them.

Do your students know how to tell if a website is credible for research? Are you overwhelmed by the sheer variety of materials available for this topic? Don’t know where to start? Determining credible web resources is a skill that all students need, but with all of the possible variations on this idea, it can be challenging to find the most practical solution. In this session, introductory lessons on how to have 6-12 students spot false versus truth sharing websites from a social science perspective will be demonstrated, and discussed. Reflections from the real world implementation of these lessons will be shared in a collaborative conversation. Free handouts of lesson templates, and student workspace templates will be provided.
Learning Objectives
By attending this session, attendees will be able to teach a lesson on website credibility with their 6-12 students using examples of false and truthful websites.

Ever struggled with covering basic computer science concepts with a kindergartner? Finding that your 5th grade students are bored with the idea of using their devices unless it is to play games. In this session, how to make coding an exciting topic for students in primary and intermediate elementary will be examined. Lesson plans and videos will be shared to engage students from the youngest age in this topic. Resources will be shared in English and Spanish.
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to facilitate the hour of code with students in grades K-5.
